The first impulse or vision of a new piece often occurs in the minutes right before I fall asleep, in that half awake half dreaming state. If I'm lucky enough to carry that fleeting image into the next day's consciousness, I take it to the studio and start sketching it directly in the wax. I find it works best for me to cut out the middlemen, paper and clay--wax is my medium. The sculpting process itself, turning a figure this way or that, reveals new possibilities for the piece. Therefore, I often elaborate on one theme such as figure on a wheel. Most of the sculptures in this show are rather large scale. Creating such large figures was very gratifying and they enjoyed great commercial success. The last transformation takes place in the casting process, turning my original vision into something as permanent as bronze, here to outlive generations to come.
