On first glance, there are whimsical childlike figures in gay and bright colors surrounded by dancing birds and smiling bees and flowers.

On second glance, the canvas beckons the viewer into its mysteries and the icons, numbers, shopping lists and found objects become an intriguing parable.

Behrens became inspired by the drawings of her little grandchildren and was also interested in the works of Dubuffet, Basquiat, Picasso and other artists whose work is childlike in appearance. Behrens was enormously impressed by a Klee exhibition she saw in New York.

Though Behrens imagery may appear simple and childlike, these are not simple paintings. Their wisdom has evolved from a deeply felt personal challenge  on the part of the artist.

“Some people might see a childs drawing as insignificant. The statement I want to make in my work is that everything matters----------EVERYTHING."
